Gifts of Stock

What are gifts of stock?

Instead of giving a cash donation, individuals or companies may instead choose to donate some of their stock holdings. This allows the beneficiary to keep the money that is not immediately needed and perhaps allow it to increase in value after the donation. It also helps the stockholder, particularly in cases of appreciated stock, by allowing him/her to bypass the high income taxes that result from the increase in value.
