Prevention and Recovery of Early Psychosis

PREP yourself.

Although many still think of psychotic illness as irreversible, scientists increasingly agree that early expert care can prevent, delay or reverse the course of chronic psychosis. The mission of PREP (Prevention and Recovery in Early Psychosis) is to transform the treatment of psychosis by intervening early with evidence-based, culturally competent assessment and diagnosis, and by delivering effective, multi-faceted treatment grounded in wellness, recovery and resilience.

The PREP Program is an academic-community partnership involving The University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), Family Service Agency of San Francisco (FSA-SF), the Mental Health Association of San Francisco (MHA-SF), Larkin Street Youth Services, and Sojourner Truth. Clinicians from FSA-SF and UCSF’s Prodrome Assessment Research Treatment (PART) project deliver a suite of comprehensive, conscientious and evidence-based services to people and families suffering from signs and symptoms of schizophrenia, schziophreniform disorder and schizoaffective disorder. Combining evidence-based and novel treatments with a holistic, strength-based approach to clinical care, PREP supports active recovery and full engagement with co-workers, peers and family members. The Mental Health Association leads the effort to inform communities about the signs, symptoms, supports and treatment resources for individuals and families suffering from early onset psychosis, with Larkin Street and Sojourner Truth working to connect homeless and traveler youth to services..
